Hiram R. McCullough, son of Hiram McCullough, was born at Elkton, Maryland, October 7, 1850. He received a most thorough and well grounded education culminating in a course of study at Washington and Lee University, at Lexington, Virginia. In 1873, Mr. McCullough began a long and steadily progressive and successful career in the railroad world. He was with the Illinois Central in the general freight department from 1873-79. His next position was at Winona, Minnesota, from 1880 through 1881, then with headquarters at Chicago from 1883 to 1885. Just appreciation of the high quality of his work brought due promotion and in the same year, 1885, he was made assistant general freight agent at Chicago. Two years later still more important advance was accorded Mr. McCullough and he became general freight agent of the same company. In this capacity he served from 1888 to 1895. His knowledge of railroad matters widened and his standing in railroad interests became of the highest, and in 1896 he became traffic manager of the company, serving for two years. The next step in this long course of executive service with the Chicago & Northwestern was his election to the office of third vice-president, and his service from 1898 through 1906. He was elected to hte vice-presidency June 23, 1906, and served long in that capacity. Mr. McCullough is now retired, but his name is widely honored in railroad circles throughout the country. Mr. McCullough is a member of the Chicago, Union League, Commercial, and Onwentsia clubs.
        Hiram R. McCullough married Martha M. Hughitt. They were the parents of two daughters: 1. Belle, who married Chauncey Blair Borland (q.v.). 2. Florence, who married Walter B. Smith.
