Mr. Hughitt came to Illinois in 1854 and has been a resident there throughout the long period of rapid grouth and expansion of that State, contributing in large measure to its progress in his chosen work in the railroad field. Marvin Hughitt was first a telegrapher, but left that work to enter railway service with the Chicago & Alton Railroad, and subsequently with the Illinois Central Railroad. With the latter he held positions as division superintendent and general superintendent. In 1870 he entered the service of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway, where he remained for only one year, acting as assistant general manager, when he became general manager of the Pullman Car Company. He began his service with the Chicago & Northwestern as general superintendent, rose to the important executive position of general manager, May 1, 1876, combining the duties of that position with those of vice-president. On June 2, 1887, Marvin Hughitt was chosen for the presidency of this organization so important in the growth of this great portion of the territory of the United States and the upbuilding of national consciousness throughout this great country. The guiding hand and brain of Mr. Hughitt determined the policy of the company for long years, for he held the office of president from 1887-1910, and from that year until 1924 his executive influence was most potential, for he held the high place of chairman of the board of directors, October 20, 1910 to June, 1924. Mr. Hughitt is a director of the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad, of the Illinois Merchants' Trust Company of Chicago.
