JOHN BORLAND, son of James B. and Elizabeth (Gray) Borland, was born in Manchester, Vermont, November 5, 1806. He appears to be the John Borland who settled first in Manchester, Bennington County, Vermont, and removed to Evans, Erie County, New York. He removed to Wisconsin in 1855, founding the lumber firm of Borland and Dean. His wife, Katherine Tupper, is said to be related to the Greens of Vermont, and was of the lineage of Tuppers of Barnstable County, Massachusetts. She was also connected with Governor Thomas Mayhew, who with his sons gave life-long service to governing the island of Martha's Vineyard, which was theirs by right of purchase. They were known especially for their work in the Christianizing of the Indians. He married (second) a Mrs. Hoyt.
Children, all of first marriage:
- John Jay, of whom further.
- Charles, who died aged twenty-two.
- Martha, who married a Mr. Irwin, of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
- Harriet.
- Kate.
- George.
